Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has emphasized the importance of an independent bar, stating that it plays a crucial role in upholding the independence of the judiciary.
Speaking at the centenary year celebration of the High Court Bar Association Nagpur, CJI Chandrachud underscored the significance of lawyers prioritizing loyalty to the court and the constitution over partisan interests. He highlighted the bar's role as a moral bulwark in safeguarding the rule of law and constitutional governance.
According to Chandrachud, the judiciary has consistently asserted its independence and non-partisanship, ensuring a separation of powers from the executive, the legislature, and vested political interests. He stressed the interdependence between the independence of the judiciary and that of the bar, emphasizing the pivotal role played by both institutions in preserving judicial integrity and constitutional values.
Addressing members of the legal fraternity, CJI Chandrachud emphasized the responsibility of lawyers to uphold the dignity of the courts and refrain from commenting on pending cases or judgments. He urged lawyers to prioritize truth and maintain the integrity of legal discourse.
